Jayden is a notti devil and as a new parent, we aren't quite sure on whether he is feeding enough or not. Today marks Day 3 that Jayden came into the world. He has been on total breastfeeding since birth and we definetely intend to continue for as long as reasonably possible. In fact, we have already invested in a $700+ dual breast pump from Medela to aid us towards the goal of total breastfeeding.
We have difficulty trying to rouse Jayden from his sleep everytime in order to feed him. Based on recommendations by Thomson's Mrs Wong Boh Boi and her book, the newborn has to be fed at least 2 to 3 hourly intervals, meaning a total of about 8-12 feeds. At day 2, he is supposed to consume about 1 - 3 oz of breastmilk and today, he has to consume about 4 - 8 oz of breast milk in order not to lose too much weight and also to get rid of the greenish shit called meconium.
And thus, he was being fed quite little on Day 2 as we simply could not get him to wake from his sleep to suckle. We then decided to use the breast pump to express some milk for Jayden and sterlize a spoon to "cup feed" him in order to prevent nipple confusion. This method wasn't working quite well as two persons will be required to do the job. And so, I bought this.

Medela Advanced Cup Feeder. This little thing cost me $59.90! But, that is just a small price to pay in order to let Jayden have the best nutrition in the world, breast milk. It worked quite well for the few times we used it and we were able to more actually measure the amount of breast milk that we are feeding Jayden. But this should be just a temporary solution. The best is obviously straight from the source.
Hazel managed to quite sucessfully breastfeed Jayden for the last two feeds. Though we are still clueless about signs of him being satisfied with the amount he is getting, we are positively sure that he is consuming milk as he has started to suckle much more. I guess with more practise and feed, we will be able to know whether he has had enough. The only thing is that I need to get something to help my wife ease those nipples. Perhaps some mummy could offer advice?
